Wedding Pro Spotlight: Michelle Anne Hair Design

I’ve lost count of how many weddings I’ve done with Michelle, and I look forward to many, many more! She has such a refined eye for detail and a modern, chic approach to wedding styling. No dated prom styles, visible bobby pins, or fallen curls on her watch! She was kind enough to let me interrogate her (with far too little notice) for this blog.
Tell us your name, what you do, and where you do it!
My name is Michelle Tomlinson, and I am the owner and lead stylist of Michelle Anne Hair Design. Based in Western MA, my company provides professional hairstyling services on-location throughout New England for weddings and events.
How did you get started as a hairstylist?
I was such a tomboy as a child and teen so I can’t say hairstyling was initially a dream of mine. But I’ve always been artistic, energetic, and extroverted, and friends and family say I make those around me feel comfortable. In 2006, I had just quit my career as a CNA and was looking for a new direction. My godmother suggested hairstyling due to my open personality and love for art. I was hesitant initially, but loved the idea of a living canvas upon which I could practice a new form of artistic expression, so I applied to New England Center for Cosmetology Education. Long story short, I became a licensed cosmetologist in 2007.
After graduating, I went straight into the workforce at a local salon providing all types of salon services: color, cuts, waxing, etc. Though I loved the work, I still felt stagnant and was looking for a more enriching work environment. Finally, with the loving support of my husband Tyler, I began my company and dove head first into full-time wedding styling. It’s been ten years since the founding of my company and I am so happy and I love what I do!

How would you describe your work?
So many people assume that wedding hairstylists only work on the weekends, or do it as a hobby. I don’t believe many people understand how large the wedding industry is and how much time it takes to manage a wedding company.
I’d describe my work as satisfying, enriching, challenging, occasionally exhausting (and anxiety producing!) The art I create is extremely satisfying, and my clientele and colleagues are some of the most well-rounded and educated individuals that I have ever met. My career is more fulfilling than I ever anticipated. I know I have helped make one of the most important days in my clients’ lives a success, and they aren’t shy about telling me that. (The Thank You cards that brides send are the sweetest endorphin boost when I’m elbow-deep in admin work!)

What inspires you?
Education! I can’t get enough of it! In-person education and networking is how I recharge my artistic and business mindset. I love seeing new hairstyling techniques and hearing how others run their businesses. I have been a stylist for almost 20 years and I will never pass up an opportunity to elevate my skills with education.
For example, I’ve just returned from an awesome class with Marta Hawro-Kociuba, an amazingly talented hair educator from Poland. And I created an LLC with my colleagues from Boston (pictured at left) called Bridal Beauty Summit. We had our first Summit last Fall, and it was such a success that we’re making it an annual event to bring well-known international wedding hair and makeup educators to New England to help elevate our industry.
What do you find most challenging about your job?
Styling hair is the fun part… but I am admittedly not an office person. It takes some serious motivation (and lots of treats) for me to sit at my computer all day. As I grow each year, the software I utilize helps automate some of the tedious admin tasks, but it is definitely a challenge!

What do you find most rewarding about your job?
Happy tears will get me every time! When brides are gushing over the style that I created, and everyone is smiling, I can’t tell you how awesome it feels. If I can manage to snag some great photos of the styles I produce AND everyone is happy, it’s a home run!
What tools or products can you not live without?
I have a pretty large hair kit and, while I might be able to downsize it to some staple faves, I truly use everything! I have curling irons, crimpers, flat irons and blow-dryers. I LOVE a long barrel curling iron. I have several brands and sizes, but long barrel is the way to go because they are much more efficient. I have everything from hair prep products to texture waxes and, of course, working and finishing hairsprays. In each style I will likely use 2-3 hot tools and about 5 different hair products. Everyone’s hair is different, so I need options. I have curated my 30+ lb bag of goodies over the years and I could not do my job without it!
What tips do you have for couples looking to hire a hair stylist?
Gather referrals from your venues and other vendors. Established wedding pros have often worked together many times, so if we are referring someone, we have full faith in their abilities and professionalism. Once you’ve complied your favorites, don’t procrastinate – if you love their portfolio, book as soon as you can! The biggest complaint I hear from couples is that they can’t find anyone available. The best hairstylists often book a year or more in advance!
